Origins and Observances- 4/20

Common myths about 420 say it refers to the active number of ingredients in cannabis (there are actually only 315) or that it is police dispatch code for cannabis (this is untrue, there is no code that exists). However the real origin was in in the early 1970s by a group teenagers who called themselves "The Waldos". Students at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California they used to meet every day after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke marijuana at the Louis Pasteur statue. Wanting to create a secret language, they spread the term to friends, and it eventually caught on. Many cannabis users continue to observe 4:20 as a time to smoke communally. It is said that this time was initially chosen because cannabis has approximately 420 active chemicals, However Cannabis only has 315 in it.By extension April 20 ("4/20" in U.S. dating shorthand) has evolved into a counterculture holiday, where people gather to celebrate and consume cannabis.
